Last year, my husband started a home renovation project to finish our basement. He had little experience with carpentry and knew even less about electrical and plumbing work. Wanting to complete the project on his own, he borrowed books from the library, watched multiple YouTube videos, and talked with experienced family members to learn how to complete the project and pass the city inspections. As you might imagine, the project progressed slowly and has been ongoing for about a year. He needed to spend time learning what to do, worked more slowly than someone with experience, and sometimes the project got put on hold while he attended to other things in his life. In contrast, we decided to hire a company to install an HVAC system and all the duct work. They were done with the whole project in three days.
Genealogical research skills are something anyone can learn, but it takes time to learn how to be most efficient and successful with your time. As a professional genealogist I have already spent hours and hours (and continue to do so) learning what records are available, where to find them, and how they can help answer a research question. I analyze every piece of information I find, many times information that someone with less experience may not realize could be helpful. And, just like the company that installed our HVAC system, I can accomplish a project in less time than the average person could do on their own with complete confidence that the job was completed according to high standards.
So, how could a professional genealogist help you? Contact me today and we'll talk about how I can help you accomplish your next family history project.
